The Two Rocks of Two Rock

We often speak place names without thinking about what they mean. For instance, there are four Grand Views in Sonoma County, one each in Sebastopol, Healdsburg, Petaluma, and Camp Meeker. Some of these live up to their name with truly grand views. Others, not so much.  There are oak place names all over  Sonoma County. We have Oak St and Oak Ln,  Oak Hollow, Oak Brook, Oak Vista, Oak Crest, etc. At some point, all those places probably did have oaks. Today, maybe or may not.

One place name that is quite unique is Two Rock. The native Americans on their treks to the coast used this formation of two rocks as a landmark for centuries. Early Spanish settlers called them Dos Piedras, or Two Rocks. The plural was lost in later translations to English, so this famous landmark is now simply Two Rock.

You can now buy the rocks…

It’s not every day that you get a chance to buy a historically interesting site with a history dating back to centuries of native American travel. You can always buy a house on an “oak” street or with a “grand view”, but Two Rock is unique.

The Two Rock property for sale consists of 23 acres overall with one unfinished house, a mobile home, a greenhouse, and some barns. I’d call it a fixer, for sure. According to what I have learned, the repairs on the house have been done with permits, but it’s not complete yet, and there is no certificate of occupancy.  That can make financing impossible hard, so the ideal buyers for this property will have acquisition cash available.

Petaluma

Petaluma's Historic D StreetPetaluma is a city with a well preserved historic center in Sonoma County. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 54,548. As of 2006, Petaluma’s population is 56,727. Petaluma Adobe State Historic Park contains the Rancho Petaluma Adobe, a National Historic Landmark. It was built beginning in 1836 by General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo, then Commandant of the San Francisco Presidio. It was the center of a vast 66,000 acre (270 km²) ranch stretching from Petaluma Creek to Sonoma Creek. The adobe is preserved buildings of its era in Northern California. Petaluma is a transliteration of the Coast Miwok phrase péta lúuma which means hill backside and probably refers to Petaluma’s proximity to Sonoma Mountain.

During the dot.com boom, Petaluma became widely known as the heart of the broadband industry and many of the world’s leading networking companies have facilities here.

Petaluma is also one of the most popular movie sites in the North Bay.

Commuters to Marin and San Francisco make up a big portion of Petaluma’s population. Petaluma

Roblar Road

Serendipidy can be your friend. In my case, a maps.google.com search for the fastest route to Dillon Beach told me part of my drive should be on Roblar Road. It’s been a while since I drove that stretch of Sonoma County between Petaluma and Sebastopol, so this morning I went for a drive.

Sonoma Cow

Man, it was beautiful.

Part of it was the light, but the magic was part green, part quiet, part animal, and a big dollop of pace. I was lucky that I left an hour early for my appointment. I had hoped to get some pictures on the drive, but the final results were much better than I had hoped for. It wasn’t just that I got some fun pictures, but that my mood got a chance to get mellow by sharing some space and time with a very special place.

The critters that get to hang out all day munching luscious Sonoma County grass may not notice that they live in a great area, but I think the California Cheese commercials on TV actually capture something when they talk about California cows. I haven’t seen any TV for sheep, but they seem to be in on the action as well.

Sonoma SheepThe one bee buzzing around the picnic was an issue that I hadn’t been aware of until my drive today. There are efforts to open a quarry on Roblar Road. I don’t know enough to take sides on this, but I feel strongly that a neighborhood as peaceful and rural as Roblar Road deserves a chance to opt out of the path of progress if they choose to. You can read more details of the issues in this Sonoma West Times and News article
